Like Loons? Like Photography?

Join renowned wildlife photographer, John DiGiacomo of Placid Times Photography, and Dr. Nina Schoch, Director of the Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation, for a wonderful weekend of photographing loons! This is a great opportunity for you to learn more about these iconic birds and how best to photograph them.

Two kayakers look for loons with binoculars.

Each workshop is limited to 6 participants, who will receive in-depth instruction about wildlife photography and loon behavior and conservation. Participants should be comfortable paddling a canoe or kayak on flat water (lakes or ponds) and have a basic knowledge of digital photography. Participants will be responsible for their own lodging, meals (snacks will be provided), camera (digital SLR or mirrorless camera with a minimum of a 300mm lens is recommended), and canoe or kayak.

Your donation of $600 to attend the workshop will help support the loon conservation efforts of the Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation.

For more information about attending this workshop, contact info@adkloon.org.

See a more detailed schedule below.

The workshop will run from Friday evening, July 15, through Sunday, July 17, midday:

Friday Late Afternoon & Evening: will include a presentation about loon natural history and the research and conservation programs of the Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation. Then we will go to a nearby lake for an evening paddle with the loons. During this paddle, Dr. Schoch will provide an overview of loon behavior and John DiGiacomo will talk about photographic techniques.

Saturday Morning: We will paddle on a different lake, providing information about loon behavior and photographic techniques as questions and opportunity arise.

Saturday Midday: We will take a midday break for lunch and critique of photos that the participants have taken. There will also be a break from 2-4pm for participants to relax and explore Saranac Lake on their own.

Saturday Evening: We will do another paddle on a different lake to take more photos of loons and continue our field instruction/discussion. People should bring a picnic dinner to enjoy on the water.

Sunday Morning: This will be our final morning on the water with the loons. We will meet after the paddle, either on shore or at the Loon Center in Saranac Lake to debrief and review the weekend.
