Boat Impacts Study: Volunteer Training
Last summer, ACLC research interns designed a study to help ACLC gather data about boat use on Adirondack lakes and how different types of boat use and congestion levels may be affecting water clarity. With community participation in mind, the interns designed data collection methods that enable anyone to participate in helping us build a meaningful data set..
This summer, ACLC will be rolling the program out to the community. This is the first training being offered to show interested community members how to use the data collection tools and how to submit collected data to ACLC.
If you want to help collect information about boat use on your lake(s), register for this free training to learn how.

Presentation: Common Loons as Environmental Sentinels
Join us in person at the Hillview Free Library for a presentation about the role of Adirondack loons in freshwater ecosystems and what we learn about the health of those ecosystems from studying them.
Virtual Presentation: Common Loons as Environmental Sentinels
Common loons are charismatic symbols of wilderness in the Adirondacks, but they also serve as environmental sentinels that help us understand the health of our lakes and ecosystems. This presentation will define what it means to be an environmental sentinel and describe how the Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation puts loons at the center of their research efforts to inform humans about the health of the ecosystems we all love and rely on.
This event will streamed live.
Kids' Program: Choosing to Protect Wildlife Starts Now!
Kids ages 5 - 12 are invited to join staff from the Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation at the Old Forge Public Library for a fun, hands-on and science-based activity about how lead fishing tackle harms loons and other wildlife. Kids will learn about how the choices we make individually can protect wildlife, and every child will receive a free lead-free tackle box starter kit! This program is sponsored by Maintain the Chain and is free!
A program for adult audiences will follow at 5 pm.
Presentation: Loons & Lead - It's Time to Make the Switch
Lead fishing tackle is a leading cause of death of Common Loons everywhere, including in the Adirondacks. The good news is that deaths of loons and other wildlife from lead poisoning is 100 percent preventable! Join us for a presentation that covers everything from general loon behavior and natural history to the threat of lead to humans and wildlife, to what you can do to help save wildlife.
NY Annual Loon Census
Volunteer to count loons for one hour during the NY Annual Loon Census! Volunteers register to cover a lake of their choice (as long as it’s not already registered for by another volunteer) and submit their data to ACLC to help create a snapshot of the loon population in the state of New York. Learn more, including how to register, on the census portion of our Research page.
