Watch the loons come into focus as we meet our capacity campaign goals to support Dr. Schoch and more!

Director of science & Conservation

After more than 25 years of studying loons in the Adirondacks, Dr. Nina Schoch, the Center’s Executive Director, looks forward to transitioning into her new role as our Director of Science and Conservation. We are excited to grow our innovative research and management efforts to enhance insight about the future for Adirondack loons and other wildlife. Dr. Schoch’s new position will contribute to:

Dr. Nina Schoch’s longstanding commitment has laid the groundwork for our strategic investment in wildlife conservation and science for the Adirondack Park.

  • Investing in our future, capitalizing on our strengths to conduct long-term wildlife scientific studies, implement improved management practices, and provide training opportunities for future environmental and wildlife leaders.;

  • Instituting new research and conservation programs to understand and address the continually emerging threats to Adirondack wildlife;

  • Translating our science into our educational and outreach programs and to inspire our community stewardship programs;

  • Spearheading an immersive exhibition “A Year in the Life of a Loon” for our Adirondack Loon Center in Saranac Lake;

  • Establishing a new Adirondack Wildlife Health Institute in partnership with SUNY ESF’s Adirondack Ecological Center.

The Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation is thrilled to announce a pivotal milestone in our continued journey towards sustained growth and excellence with the initiation of our strategic succession plan.

Our succession plan will fortify our leadership structure, streamline operations for the future, and continue the expansion of our scientific research, educational programs, and management efforts to better protect Adirondack loons and the waters where they live. As one of the leading organizations in the Adirondacks devoted to wildlife health and conservation, our scientific and conservation efforts have made many contributions to the scientific and public communities.

$350,000 Capacity Campaign

Thus, we are now launching a $350,000 capacity campaign to fund Dr. Schoch’s wonderful new position and its associated projects over the next three years.  This campaign will support the costs related to fieldwork, educational programs, expansion of our data and science, community events, and all that goes along with the exceptional wildlife science and conservation work led by Dr. Nina Schoch.

We invite you to join us in this opportunity to further the Loon Center’s work to benefit wildlife conservation in the Park, focusing on the beautiful icon of the Adirondacks – the Common Loon.

Your 3-year pledge will support this exciting expansion of our loon conservation and research programs.
