Loon Zoom #2: Loons of Mt. Desert Island: The Roles of Biological Specialization and Geography on Territorial Dynamics

  • Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation 75 Main Street Saranac Lake, NY, 12983 United States (map)

Billy Helprin, Director of the Somes-Meynell Wildlife Sanctuary on Mt. Desert Island in Maine, will talk about the implications of the behavioral and anatomical specializations of loons which make them so good at chasing fish underwater, but create many challenges for nesting success and survival. We'll also talk about the role that the location of loon territories on a large island along the Atlantic coast plays: with easy access by non-territory holding loons residing primarily on the ocean to frequently challenge residents on nearby lakes; the prevalence of splitting time between lake and ocean by territorial residents with chicks; and the opportunity for flight capable chicks to unite with their parents on the ocean, where the parent-offspring bond has been observed to continue in a new environment for the adult and youngster post-fledging.

Loon Zooms cost $10 to register, or register for all 6 for $50.
